Bungarun (Derby Leprosarium) served as a leprosy hospital from 1936-1986 to solely treat Aboriginal people. Over 50 years, about 1400 people were sent there. The Bungarun Memorial which has been established on the site, lists the names of the 357 people buried in the Bungarun Cemetery, whose graves are marked with anonymous white crosses. Bungarun is recognized as a significant Aboriginal heritage site and was placed on the Register of Historic Places in 2000.
